Schapenberg Sir Lowry’s Wine Walks

The Schapenberg Sir Lowry’s Conservancy home to some 650- 750 fynbos species, was initiated by the Helderberg Conservation Forum (HCF) and 15 Private landowners in 2000 with the vision to promote awareness and the preservation of the natural environment on the Schapenberg hills and adjacent mountain slopes. The Conservancy was registered in 2003 and includes CapeNature’s Hottentots Holland Reserve.

The conservancy has initiated guided ‘Biodiversity and Wine Walks’ on the Schapenberg which raise awareness of the need to conserve the biodiversity and natural ecosystems of the area and to attract tourist to local wine farms to sample the award wining wines of the region. Walks meander along natural fynbos areas and vineyards.

Funds raised from the walks go towards preserving and restoring the natural environment of the region. The environment is under huge threat from agriculture, development and alien vegetation invasion. The walks are supported by the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), HCF, Cape Town Tourism, and the City of Cape Town as the Schapenberg hills and adjacent mountain slopes lie within the city’s biodiversity map defining areas if conservation worthiness.
