Simonsberg Environmental Education Centre

The new Simonsberg Environmental Education (SEE) Centre at DelVera, was developed out of the vision of the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy acting as a non-profit and and public benefit organisation, whereby the benefits to the community are accrued through environmental education, skills training and job creation. The Cape Winelands Municipality funded the initial setting up of the centre.  The SEE Centre will be an asset to the community of Stellenbosch, whereby a myriad of fun activities for school children focusing on key environmental weeks, together with interactive displays, resources and information will be accessible to the public free of charge.

The Greater Simonsberg Conservancy, consisting of 28 members, is situated in the wine region of Stellenbosch amid rare renosterveld fynbos, just 50 kilometers from Cape Town, South Africa.

The Conservancy was instrumental in the implementation of Landcare and Cape Winelands sponsored environmental camps, where more than 600 children had the chance to attend these three-day camps. The focus of the camps is on environmental awareness through practical lessons and fun activities. These were all organised and facilitated by the conservancy. The Greater Simonsberg Conservancy is a prime example of a conservancy involving the community with their conservation efforts.
